  WPUK Unconference 2014 proposed venue 

  Bournemouth is the proposed venue of WPUK Unconference 2014, with Birmingham expected to be added as an alternative.

  The deadline for submissions for the venue bids has been extended to Saturday 22 March 2014, by the WPUK Core Group, to accommodate the second proposal.

  If there is more than one proposal, a ballot of registered WPUK Discuss users will select the winning venue.

  When examining proposals, it’s important to look at all aspects – not just the city the venue is located.

  For example, costs attached to proposals will obviously be a factor in setting ticket prices for attendees.

  Any questions or comments on the Bournemouth proposal should be made in the comments to this post.

    I hope Bournemouth wins. I also hope that the sun shines as much as it did in Lancaster last year. Might have to arrive a day early so I can have a walk on Studland beach!

    Birmingham is the second proposed venue for WPUK Unconference 2014.

    A ballot of registered WPUK Discuss users, to select the winning venue, is planned to start on Tuesday 25 March 2014.

    In the meantime, as with the Bournemouth proposal, any questions or comments on the Birmingham proposal should be made in the comments to this post.

  WPUK Wiki porting proceeds 

  Work has starting moving content from the WPUK wiki to http://wpuk.org/

  I’m phasing the transfer, as the volume of material, along with tidying up aspects of both the content and code, has been somewhat surprising in the amount of time it is taking.

  Here’s the current state of play on the move of content from the MediaWiki site to the WordPress powered WPUK:

  • using .htaccess http://wiki.wpuk.org redirects to http://wpuk.org/events/
  • content relating to local groups and the WPUK Unconference 2014 (working title) now resides at http://wpuk.org/events/ – the old wiki URLs for this material now redirect to new http://wiki.wpuk.org URLs
  • the previous WPUK conferences remain on the wiki for now, and are linked from http://wpuk.org/events/

  The rest of the content will be ported over in the next few weeks.

  All the new pages of ex-wiki content are at beta status – please make any bug reports in the comments to this post.

  I’ll also report on the progress of this project in the comments.

  UK WP unconference 7 update: 9 February 2014 

  Here’s the current state of play for the UK WP unconference 2014:

  • Birmingham and Bournemouth are under investigation as potential venues
  • Content ideas for sessions can now be proposed

  Originally subscribers to the WPUK mailing list would have been balloted to decide the winning venue.

  Since the mailing list has been superceded, this role will now be carried out by registered users of WPUK Discuss.

  Find out about arrangements for the event, which is the follow-up to WordCamp Lancaster UK 2013.

    I’ve been messing with the P2 theme and discovered a little code snippet that makes the ‘blog post’ option the default in the ‘new post’ box. If you’re interested, let me know and I’ll post it up.

      Hi Paul – I’ve tried such snippets before in P2 child themes – the problem previously is that upgrades do not take such hacks into account.

      However, it’s likely we’ll move to o2 when it’s released as a self hosted system http://geto2.com/

      I’m currently taking part in beta testing of o2 on WordPress.com – the successor to P2 will have a plugin system that should enable making ‘blog post’ the default much easier.
