Can anyone recommend a UK based hosting provider?
I’ve been having a lot of problems with my hosting lately. The hosting company have always worked hard to fix things but I’ve now reached the point where I’m considering switching. Can any one recommend a good UK based hosting provider? They don’t have to be WordPress-specific but that wouldn’t do any harm.

Hi Rachel,
Disclaimer: I am Lead WordPress Developer at the company I’m about to recommend. In any case, here goes: http://www.electrichosting.co.uk/

Rachel,
hi there… try *hostnine.com * – we’ve got several
servers with them – their online help and support tickets are great – they
are VERY fast at responding… and they know their stuff… and it’s a good
price as well.
And… before you ask, no… I’m not on commission with them – wish I was.
best regards
David

Hi Rachel,
WPEngine.com are WordPress specific and offer a UK geographic service. Great staging/live servers backup, security and speed. Very knowledgeable support too.
Good luck!

I use Site5.com for all my hosting on Kimb’s recommendation a while ago and they have been great. They are not UK based but you can host on UK servers.

I’ve used Heart Internet for years now – never any issues at all.

I’ve used Vidahost for the last 18month or so after switching from the previous hosting company due to sentiment and have been really happy with them.

I agree with Louis, I’d recommend Heart Internet. I’ve had a reseller account for about 8 years and in the last year also setup a VPS as well both with no issues.
If I do have to ask them something, their support is also really quick.

Hi Rachel, I’ve use a number of different hosting companies, but found http://www.nublue.co.uk to be reliable and quick to respond if I ever have any problems. I’ve used them for 5 years and might be worth checking.

Eukhost.com – I have never used them, but I know people who have hosted WordPress on their shared hosting for ten years and are very happy.
EZPZhosting.co.uk shared hosting is good and their support is way above average.
Racksrv.com VPS service is excellent.
I have also heard good things about Heart, but have no personal experience.

A colleague had a lot of problems with Eukhosting about a year ago, but they may have resolved the problems now.
I have a few sites hosting with EZPZhosting, but the UK server(s) have had a number of issues over the last 2 years.
Both are cheaper options, so I guess you get what you pay for?

I used to use EUKHost.com and for a long time they were very good. However some problems regarding VPS servers meant I had no choice to leave. For smaller sites, with shared hosting they provided good value for money.

I think this topic is a hardy perennial. Hosts change, I am constantly looking round for alternatives – I like to spread my hosting across more than one provider for one thing.
On this shiny new site, maybe this needs to be a sticky topic – or WPUK Hosting Awards, anyone? :-)

Tim – This thread will be sticky, in the sense it will remain on the site, however I would prefer to keep topics in reverse chronological in order to avoid any possible confusion.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone – I will take a look at them all. @Tim I think it is indeed a hardy perennial – seems to be an issue for me every couple of years :(

I’ll chuck webfaction into the ring. Great service, I really appreciate the no nonsense approach they have. Also a nice affiliate scheme **cough cough** http://www.webfaction.com/signup?affiliate=terminalpixl

Depending on the project requirements, Heart Internet get a +1 from me. Good support and value, not the fastest (shared reseller) though. Another worthy contender is TSO Host which I’m evaluating long term with the aim of migrating over from Heart (as TSO are cheaper).

What are the problems you’ve got with your current host? If it’s something like being hacked, then I’d definitely go with managed hosting like WPEngine. They offer guarantees against that sort of thing, and fix your site for free.
All hosting is ok until something goes wrong, so you’d be best off finding out what a hosting company’s support is like before going with them. Phone them up to discuss the issues you’ve been having and see if they can convince you that they’d be able to do any better!

I second Paul B’s comment. Every host has a bad experience, and the measuring stick is (usually) their support response.
Is there a legal reason for wanting UK hosting? Ticket-based, phone-less support can be very good. Using CDN can help site speed for visitors no matter where site content is managed.

Another reason that I have found for UK host is the time zone the server will be on. This comes into play if the host have to run upgrades etc. and the server has to be down for 20 minutes. Hosts usually do this during the night but if you are on a US server for example the middle of the night could be prime-time traffic for your visitors in the UK.
Therefore for these reasons I would go for a UK/Europe host.

I believe that for SEO purposes it is good to have a UK based host, if your primary market is to UK customers. If you have a UK TLD like .co.uk it is not needed but wouldn’t do any harm.
Also I found this from WPEngine:
http://wpengine.com/2012/06/20/going-global-bringing-the-power-of-wp-engine-to-eu-and-asia/
“There are several reasons to locate your WordPress-powered website in the EU or Asia, including:
Reduced latency for domestic visitors because the closer the server is to the site visitor, the faster the site can load.
British and European Union, as well as Asian legal jurisdiction.
Compliance of the EU Data Protective Directive on exporting personal data outside of the EU.
