WordPress 4.3 has been released.
Some of the key features in this release are:
This post from last week on the WordPress Core blog offers some interesting insight on the possible future direction of the back-end editor user interface: http://make.wordpress.org/core/2014/08/20/gsoc-update/
Three things stand out in that piece:
a) The inclusion of a visual interface for plugins and shortcodes within the editor window, so possibly things like columns can be visualised more easily for users (the example on that page shows how a Google Map can be used). The forthcoming WordPress 4.0 release will already make embeds (such as YouTube videos) visible in the editor screen, so it’s good that things are heading in this direction.
b) No refreshing the page/post on hitting the Publish button, which makes things feel a lot quicker.
c) Whilst WordPress 4.0 will bring a floating editor toolbar that’s “sticky” and stays at the top of the editor box even when you scroll (which I think is a great idea!), it looks from the ideas posted on that blog above that an inline editor is being explored instead of a toolbar positioned at the top. Personally, though, I’m not convinced that’s going to make things more intuitive for most users, but can see it has its benefits.
Exciting stuff and look forward to following these developments!
Mike – all very interesting, indeed….
The fourth and likely final beta of WordPress 4.0 is now available. More than 250 changes have been made in the past month. See http://wordpress.org/news/2014/08/wordpress-4-0-beta-4/ for full details.

This maintenance release fixes 34 bugs in WordPress 3.9. Automatic background updates for 3.9.1 have now started rolling out. See http://wordpress.org/news/2014/05/wordpress-3-9-1/

I have just had a couple of sites decide to auto-update from 3.9.1 to WordPress 4.0-alpha-20140507 it doesn’t seem to be causing any problems, but…..
Tim – I’ve just had one of my sites do that too. I don’t get it? None of the others have. Any ideas?
Is it running the en-GB version by any chance?
If so perhaps you would like to add your voice here: http://wordpress.org/support/topic/running-v40-alpha-and-i-dont-know-why?replies=3#post-5555255

TRANSLATION ISSUES
If your WordPress version is showing “4.0-alpha” rather than “3.9” for a non US English install this is due to an incorrect localization build for your language.
Other than the incorrect version number there are no other code differences between the versions and include the correct 3.9 translations.
This can cause plugins to display compatibility notices “Warning: This plugin has not been tested with your current version of WordPress”
nl_NL has been updated now, though previously it was serving up the wrong revision of WordPress (4.0-alpha), even though the data was correct (3.9)
is_IS has not been updated at this stage and is currently serving up the wrong revision of WordPress (4.0-alpha), even though the data is correct (3.9).
Details to resolve the issue can be found here once the localization package has been updated.
Would it be simpler to just restore from a recent (like this morning) backup and let the update run again if this issue has been fixed?
I restored to a previous backup. Then WP auto-updated again to 3.9.1 this time, successfully.
